Autism
ELI5 - What actually is autism?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition where the brain processes social cues, language, interests, and sensory input differently. It’s a spectrum, so people can need very different kinds of support—and many have specific strengths, like deep focus or pattern spotting. It’s not an illness to “catch” or “cure,” just a different way of thinking and sensing.
How doctors define it: Using the DSM-5, a diagnosis needs all three social-communication differences (reciprocity, nonverbal cues, relationships) plus at least two of these: repetitive movements/speech, strong need for sameness/routines, highly focused interests, or unusual sensory responses. Someone with repetitive behaviors but no social-communication differences wouldn’t meet criteria.
